Oh, This Bloody Coke Thing

Consider if you will: a public elementary school has a fundraiser for Juvenile Diabetes.  This school offers reduced-fat and whole wheat items on its lunch menu.   Its students are asked to bring a healthy snack and water to school each day.  Some of its students have the opportunity to earn play money for good behavior and achievement, and with this money they can choose to purchase a number of rewards, including Coke products.  So conceivably, with their healthy snack & water on their desk, after they’ve eaten a sandwich on whole wheat bread with a reduced fat cookie, on the same day they brought a dollar to donate toward Juvenile Diabetes (and therefore got to wear pajamas to school), with perhaps two diabetic children and a number of ADHD kids in their classroom as well, they can then ‘buy’ and pop open a Coke, and sip from it, at their desk, for the remainder of the day.  You probably know what I think about this.  I’d like to hear what you think.

And while we’re on the subject, the American Academy of Family Physicians has accepted $500,000 from the Coca-Cola Company, in exchange for Coke getting the opportunity to educate us about sweeteners on FamilyDoctor.org.  Please see coverage of this audacious partnership from the Coalition for a Commercial-Free Childhood, and also from ABC.com.  The CCFC site, naturally, suggests ways you can express your particular version of “WTF?”

Happy Friday!

No surprised reaction from this reader. I have read things about the CDC, AAP, and AMA that made my skin crawl.

What type of education are we hoping to receive about sweeteners? If it’s as good as the “informercials” on high fructose corn syrup, I think I’ll pass.

Did you know that high fructose corn syrup is the nutritionally the same as sugar? And that it’s fine in moderation? And that it’s in about 65% of the processed foods you pick up from the supermarket shelves? If, in one day, you eat a bowl of sugary cereal, drink some juice, have anything with regular ketchup on it, eat a couple of slices of bread, and wash it down with some soda, you’ve just ingested something that is nutritionally the same as sugar with everything you ate. Doesn’t sound like moderation to me.
