In Red Pill Papa's defense, I have to point out that Michelle Obama is not the government, she is the president's wife, and a mom, rightly concerned about the plight of American children's health. The government does not force-feed us toxic products for increased profits, they "get in bed" with industry for campaign funds and votes (there, Mark, you and I certainly agree). And while I certainly don't agree that Obama (Mr., not Mama) is a moron, it does seem that no matter who is in the big chair, they can no longer run this country in a properly democratic manner. Crappy article? I've seen much worse. But yay for our first negative comment!

Our government should not talk down to anyone. They are the ones force feeding dangerous chemicals down our throats for increased profits. They are in bed with the FDA, AMA and pharmaceutical companies. Obama is just a puppet following the lead of every other moron president. What a crappy article.

Thanks for voicing your opinion, Julia. I watched NBC Nightly News this eveing to see how they covered this story. Obama's strong message was diluted because NBC chose to show her interview with the editor of Newsweek, John Meecham, Instead of the First Lady's Grocery Manufacturers of America appearance. Perhaps NBC didn't want to rock the boat with their advertisers (read big food companies), by repeating the most impactful part of her speech. The clip they used was Obama answering the question "In fighting the obesity epidemic, would she go so far as putting warning labels on products such as Twinkies and Froot Loops?" Obama responsed that "it strikes me as extreme. A Twinkie is not a cigarette. What parents need is information about what's in a Twinkie and how much of this can we eat...It's not that we can't have a Twinkie...kids would be pretty upset. I'm not supporting that." Oh Brian Williams, you should have given this story the weight that it deserved.

Well said, Red Pill Papa! This is one of the most important issues of our time and really does not get enough press. Someday we will hopefully be able to look back at this entire era of producing bad-for-you foods that lure kids the same way we look back on when people smoked while pregnant or had three martini lunches. It just seems so obviously wrong, and hopefully with pressure from people like Michelle Obama and US things will one day be different. I know my husband and I spend a lot more energy educating our boys about "good food choices" than our parents did. We have to because there are more temptations in more glitzy packaging and in more ready availability than there ever was when we were kids. Thanks for sharing!
